The deck
30 comfort zone challenges.
Six suits, one for each kind of social fear. Each suit runs from rank 1, something you could do tonight, to rank 5, the deep end. Every card is safe, legal, and kind, and a no always counts.
Talking to strangers challenges
Approach.
Starting conversations with people you don't know, from one easy question up to hosting the room.
- 1
The weather report
Ask one stranger a simple logistical question ("which bar has the best band right now?") and hold eye contact through the full answer.
- 2
Compliment drive-by
Three genuine, specific compliments to three different strangers. "That hat with that jacket is a choice, and it works."
- 3
The 5-minute local
Keep a stranger conversation going for 5 full minutes. Get their name, their hometown, and one thing they are excited about.
- 4
Group infiltration
Join a group of 3 or more people you don't know. Get introduced to everyone before you leave.
- 5
The connector
Meet two separate strangers or groups, then introduce them to each other like you're hosting the bar.
Speaking up challenges
Voice.
Being heard: a slower, steadier voice, then volume, then a toast, then a stage.
- 1
Down-shift
For 10 minutes, end every sentence on a downward inflection. No uptalk.
- 2
The order, slowly
Order a drink 30% slower and 20% louder than feels natural. Pause once mid-order and don't fill the silence.
- 3
Song request, broadcast
Get the band's attention between songs and make a request loud enough that people nearby turn around.
- 4
The toast
Stand and give a 20-second toast to people you just met. Full commitment, no half-standing.
- 5
Stage time
Get on stage. Sing a line, join karaoke, or get the mic for one sentence.
Being seen challenges
Space.
Taking up room and holding eye contact while people can see you.
- 1
Claim the rail
Take full space at the bar for 5 minutes: elbows wide, feet planted. Don't shrink when someone walks up.
- 2
The slow scan
Scan the whole room slowly for 60 seconds. Catch eyes, smile, nod. Look away first no more than twice.
- 3
Statue on Broadway
Stand completely still on a busy sidewalk, out of anyone's way, for 2 minutes. No phone.
- 4
Front and center
Take the most visible spot in the venue for two full songs, visibly enjoying yourself.
- 5
Dance floor pioneer
Be the first person dancing where nobody is dancing. Hold it for a full song.
Rejection challenges
Ask.
Asking for things that might get a no, and learning the no is short and survivable.
- 1
The small favor
Ask a stranger to take your photo. Then ask for one more "with better vibes."
- 2
The discount probe
Ask with a smile: "Any chance there's a deal on this tonight?" Take the no gracefully.
- 3
Engineered no
Make a request you expect to be refused. The goal is collecting the no calmly.
- 4
The borrowed hat
Ask a stranger to lend you an accessory for one photo. Sweeten the deal however you like.
- 5
The guest list
Charm your way into something: a reserved section, a rooftop, a photo with the band. Charm only.
Reading people challenges
Read.
Watching a room, writing predictions down first, and checking them against what happens.
- 1
Baseline snapshot
Watch one person for 3 minutes without staring. Note their baseline: posture, drink pace, who they check in with.
- 2
Pedal tavern census
Predict first, then count: songs per loop, drinks before departure, who leads the group. Verify what you can.
- 3
Spot the regulars
Sort a room into locals and tourists. Write down 3 tells, then confirm one by asking.
- 4
The mood forecast
Write down what the room's energy will do in the next 15 minutes. Then watch.
- 5
Blind bartender read
Chat for 2 minutes, then guess 3 things about them out loud. Score your hits.
Looking silly challenges
Play.
Being goofy in public on purpose until nobody watching matters much.
- 1
Tourist mode on
Take an unapologetically enthusiastic tourist photo somewhere crowded. Jumping shot, peace signs, all of it.
- 2
Air band
One full chorus of flawless air guitar or air fiddle. Full commitment.
- 3
Line dance wildcard
Join a line dance you don't know. Make the mistakes bigger and keep smiling.
- 4
Two truths, Broadway edition
Sell an absurd, harmless bit for 60 seconds ("I'm the state cornhole champion"), then reveal it and laugh together.
- 5
The flash parade
Start a conga line, a cheer, or a singalong that 3 or more strangers join.
Pick one. Go.
The app deals you three cards a night from the suit you dread most, and tracks the gap.
